THE ALLEGORY OF THE CAVE

3 week build - an art installation for Sam Zell's birthday party in Cinespace, Chicago, IL.

We often see only the shadows on the wall and think they are reality. It takes courage to free one's mind from the shackles of conformity and step out into the bright light of a greater reality. A reality we cannot prove with empirical methods. It is the faculty of the imagination that embraces the task of seeking this truth. The meanings of our lives come from the stories we tell. I built this cave out of stories to honor the effort writers make to document that which is discovered in the imagination.

Fall 2014, in a team varying from 3 - 5 people at a time, we gathered 30,000 books to build a labyrinth to depict Plato's Allegory of the Cave.

My responsibilities were to

  • Create the concept drawings

  • Gathering the materials (books, 2x4 wood, nail guns & other tools

  • Building the cave structure

It was an installation piece that stood for 48 hours for a private event.

Art Direction and concept by David Carlson.
